Remember that this is someone you are entrusting your newly born child with which means you should be very cautious on who the person will be. Knowing how to choose a babysitter will go a long way in making sure you make the right choice. This is a sour area because selecting the wrong person might mean you will be back in the search as a result of the person quitting before he or she gives you a notice or last-minute session cancels. When you are selecting the person you will be leaving your child with, you should make sure they do know how to care for a child given how delicate babies are. Thus, ask for references and talk to the parents the person has worked for before.
Since the sitter will be home alone with the child as you work, you need to make sure if a medical emergency comes up they will be able to intervene which is why they require CPR and first-aid training. The training does not take a lot of time which means you can enroll the sitter in the classes before he or she starts the job. You can offer to pay for the classes so that they will be motivated to attend. Take note of the time the person arrives for the meeting because this will reflect on how he or she will be reporting to work. A person who shows up late for the first meeting without a proper reason should not be excused.
You need a sitter who is good with kids because it is the baby they will be spending a lot of time with. No matter how desperate you are to get a sitter, a one minute interview is not enough to get all the information you need about the sitter which is why you should probe deeper. If you have a gut feeling that you should do a bit more of probing, you should conduct an observation session. Remember that even if it is an observation session the person will be taking care of the child which means he or she still deserves to be paid. The sitter needs to get used to the child and vice versa and this session is as important to the sitter so that he or she can determine if the position is suitable.
